LAS believes that clear and
consistent consequences are important in helping
students learn appropriate school behavior. The
school monitors student behavior in and out of the
classroom. Teachers chart behavior each class
period in the areas of classroom attendance, work
productivity, and classroom behavior. Results in
each class are then totaled at the end of each day
and used to monitor and evaluate student progress.
Rewards and consequences are
individualized for each student and are based on
student performance and behavior. Appropriate
school behavior determines eligibility for school
trips and participation in the work study program.
Additionally, behavioral
contracts and individualized incentive plans are set
up for students to help them achieve specific
behavioral goals (e.g., improving school attendance,
classroom performance, etc.). Students can earn
rewards for successfully meeting their behavioral
goals.
Consequences used to address student misbehavior
include loss of privileges, detention, in-school
suspension, suspension, transition to the
after-school program, and expulsion. LAS employs a
policy of progressive discipline, meaning that
repeat policy offenders receive escalating
disciplinary consequences.
